My impression of Russians based on my previous visit here was Russians were a cold, reserved people. In Moscow, I do not recall many smiles. The lack of helpful English signage did not give me a warm, welcoming impression. My visa application process was arduous, compounding this impression. Russian history is filled with nationalism (MOTHER RUSSIA!!!), which is not typically a friendly dynamic for foreigners. These feelings were not as prevalent in Saint Petersburg, however the very genesis of Saint Petersburg is to be the “Window to the West,” making it inherently more welcoming.
I think my preconceptions colored my perception of Russians on my previous trip. My life experience has expanded and has changed my insights since then. This trip has dispelled the idea that Russians are a cold, reserved people. At my hostel in Nizhny Novgorod I met a Russian girl, Anna, fluent in English. After describing my first train leg to Anna, I had mentioned my anxiety about catching the next train toward Kazan. The station in Nizhny Novgorod is smaller and did not convey a sense of organization that my previous station had. This was to be my first overnight leg, adding to my uneasiness. To my surprise, Anna immediately offered to come with me to the station. It may not seem like a big deal, however my time in Russia is limited. Following my schedule is critical. I know that rebooking a ticket may not be difficult, but it is still a process I hope to not write about. Adding to my surprise, other Russians from my hostel learned about my apprehension. Not all of them even spoke English, but were eager to support me. I ended up with an entourage escort and a new impression of our Russian friends.
…and it was good fortune they came. Given the events in France and other parts of the world, the police have increased document checks and searches. I was stopped. Having my new Russian friends all there to interpret was a blessing. I also think it made the police feel more at ease with me. I am happy to report my first experience with the Russian Police was professional and positive.
